Telephones have changed! For many years, people rented telephones from the telephone company. Now, consumers are able to purchase their own phones at department stores, hardware stores, discount catalog stores, and electronic equipment stores.    In the past, telephones were traditionally black and had a rotary dialing system. Nowadays, most telephones have push-buttons, which the user presses when making a telephones call. These touchtone telephones come in colors to match every room of the house and are available in a variety of styles. Some phones for the bedroom include a clock radio and an alarm. There are Big Bird and Mickey Mouse phones for children. There are cordless phones that allow the user to walk around the house while talking on the phone, car phones that allow people to talk on the telephone while driving, and flip phones that people can carry with them wherever they go!     There are many different telephone models to select from .In traditional models, the dial and the receiver are two separate pieces .Now, one-piece  phones are popular :On the phones, the receiver and the dial are contained in one unit. There are also speaker phones that allow the user to have a conversation without holding the receiver. Some phones even have a telephone memory bank. Frequently called numbers can be programmed into the telephone’s memory and then dialed by pressing just one or two buttons. In addition, many home phones now include answering machines that automatically answer a telephone, play a message from the owner of the phone, and then record the caller’s message.      Special services are available from the telephone company for an additional monthly charge. With call waiting, a person who is talking on the phone will hear a beep if someone else is trying to call. The person can then answer the other call while putting the first caller on hold. With call forwarding, a person can program a phone so that calls can be received at another phone number. Another special feature is three-way calling .This feature permits three people in different places to have a conversation together.      Telephones have changed greatly in the past few years, and the will most like continue to change as technology becomes more and more sophisticated in the future.P43
